Merasi Musicians
About
Merasi Musicians are folk musicians and storytellers in the Thar Desert of northwestern Rajasthan. Their traditional music has been passed down from their ancestors for over 800 years in 38 generations making it an intangible cultural heritage, as defined by UNESCO.
They are a group of Muslim musicians who sing to a local Hindu goddess and perform for both Hindus and Muslims in their community, often referred to as Manganiyaars.
Today, the music is thriving as literate young Merasis play multiple instruments such as the nagara, khartals and murli.
The group has performed at various prestigious events in India and completed three tours in America for a variety of stages such as community arts centers and universities.
They exhibited their ancient music at the Boston New England Conservatory in 2016 and have also shot a roof-top music video in Brooklyn.
Their music is irresistible, full of passion, rhythm, and joy that will warm your heart, stir your soul and get you moving on their fine tunes and soulful renditions.
